A Glimpse Into History – The SS Dunraven Built in 1873 by C. Mitchell & Co. in Newcastle upon Tyne, the SS Dunraven was a British steam-and-sail cargo vessel originally tasked with trading between Britain and Bombay. Her final journey began in January 1876, carrying steel and timber to India and returning loaded with spices, cotton, and muslin. Tragically, on April 25th, 1876, the Dunraven struck a reef near Sha’ab Mahmoud, just outside of what is now Ras Mohammed National Park. The vessel capsized and sank into 25 meters of water, where she remains today — an underwater museum preserved by time and nature.
